Istana Khir: MACC to probe Khir Toyo

Istana Khir: MACC to probe Khir Toyo

KUALA LUMPUR (July 8, 2009): The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is to investigate allegations that Selangor opposition leader Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo spent a whopping RM24 million to build a Balinese-style mansion in Shah Alam during his tenure as the Selangor Mentri Besar.

MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Ahmad Said Hamdan said the commission has not received any complaint regarding the allegations but has learnt about the matter and will get more details from the Selangor state government.

A probe can be launched anytime, he said when contacted by China Press on Tuesday.

On Monday, Mohd Khir brushed off allegations that his property is worth RM24 million and said he secured a RM3.5 million loan to buy the house five years ago.

The Sungai Panjang assemblyman said if Sekinchan assemblyman Ng Suee Lim, who made the allegations, was right about the price, the latter was welcome to be his agent, sell the property and take 50% of the earnings.

Ng has verbally accepted Mohd Khir's "offer".

On Tuesday, Mohd Khir showed Sin Chew Daily documents to prove that he took the RM3.5 million loan from Hongkong and Shanghai Bank and said he had no problem servicing the monthly loan repayment of RM18,743 as he is now involved in business from which he is making RM50,000 a month.

"I was a Mentri Besar for eight years, on top of it my businesses are expanding, am I not able to afford the house?" he asked, in response to Ng's query on how he could afford the monthly payments on the house with his assemblyman’s allowance of about RM8,000 a month.

"Before I became the MB, I was a dentist with a monthly income of RM60,000," he said, adding that now he is making some RM50,000 a month from his businesses alone, which is more than enough to pay for the loan installments.

He said he will sue Ng for defamation. "I will not let him go," he told Sin Chew.

Mohd Khir also said the Balinese-style renovation is "not as expensive as one thinks".

He said had he opted for an Italian architectural style, the house would have cost more.

"I spent only RM60,000 on renovation. All transactions can be supported by documents. I don't understand how Ng came up with the figure of RM24 million for the house."

He said apart from the new house in Shah Alam, he also owns another house in Sungai Besar which he bought before he became the Mentri Besar.

He disclosed that the contractor hired to do renovation for the house has run away and he had no idea when the house would be ready for him to move in.

Meanwhile, Selangor senior exco member Teresa Kok has urged the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) and the MACC to investigate Mohd Khir's financial situation.

He said IRB should do an audit on Mohd Khir's tax returns for the last 10 years to ensure that the tax he paid was in tandem with his lifestyle.
